Livestock and poultry statistics that are generated at the BAS cater to the
data requirements of the livestock and poultry raisers, researchers, and the
government planners. These are used in the evaluation of production programs in
the sector and the agricultural performance as a whole.
Data on inventory are badly needed by the business establishments dealing on
veterinary products and feed manufacturers to determine the market for their
products. Importers of livestock and poultry breeders also need information on
grandparents and parent stocks to be imported. The major activities are as
follows:
1. Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS)
This is a quarterly survey of livestock and poultry farming households and is
conducted simultaneously with the Rice and Corn Production Survey. This survey
generates current information on the inventory of livestock and poultry in
backyard farms for the reference of the Secretary of Agriculture and data users.
The BLPS covers around 6,534 sample rice and corn farming households and 3,215
non-farming households in 3,040 barangays nationwide. Its objectives are:
- To gather livestock and poultry population by kind, by purpose, sex, age
groups, and province;
- To provide current statistics on animals slaughtered on farms; and
- To provide government policy makers and other data users with overall
situation and outlook of the livestock and poultry industry.
2. Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS
This is a semestral survey of carabao and cattle inventory by farm type, by
classification, volume and value of production, supply and disposition. The CLPS
covers around 142 independent carabao farms and 843 independent cattle farms
with greater than 20 head each, regardless of age. Its objectives are:
To gather cattle and carabao population by purpose, sex, age group, and
province;
- To provide current statistics on animals slaughtered on farms; and
- To provide government policy makers and other data users with overall
situation and outlook of the carabao and cattle industry.
3. Monitoring of Animals Slaughtered in Abattoirs (MASA)
This is a quarterly monitoring of BAS in coordination with the National Meat
Inspection Commission (NMIC). This activity provides monthly data on animals
slaughtered and dressed in abattoirs/slaughterhouses and thus provide an
indicator in the estimation of livestock and poultry meat production. The data
generated from this activity supplements the information gathered from the BLPS
and CLPS. Its objectives are:
- To collect monthly reports on the number of carabao, cattle, goat, hog,
chicken and other types of animals slaughtered in abattoirs;
- To gather information on capacities of existing abattoirs and identify areas
where such facilities are needed; and
- To confer with livestock industry authorities and conduct periodic review and
assessment of animals slaughtered in various abattoirs in the country.
