1. CROPS
  • In South Cotabato, palay farms were on vegetative stage while in Norala, Santo Niño and Surallah, harvesting was taking place.
  • In Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat, about 2,000 hectares of palay farms were ready for planting early in the first quarter of 2013.
  • In Pres. Quirino, about 24 hectares were newly planted to sugarcane. Sugarcane area in this municipality is expanding because of the presence of contract growers and buyers of centrifugal sugar.
  • In Tulunan, North Cotabato, about 59 hectares were harvested with 235 mt. of yellow corn (hybrid); about 93 hectares produced 284 mt. of hybrid white corn; and 49 hectares were harvested with 91.70 mt. of OPV white corn.
  • In North Cotabato particularly Kidapawan City, Makilala and Magpet, an off-season fruiting of mangosteen, rambutan and marang was observed attributed to climatic change.
2. PRICES AND MARKET SUPPLY
  • In North Cotabato, prevailing buying price of rubber cup lump decreased from P47.00 per kilogram last month to P46.00 per kilogram this month. The buying price of rubber in the province was highly dependent on the price trend in the world market.
  • In Kidapawan City, retail prices per kilogram ranged from P90.00-P120.00 for mangosteen; P70.00-P90.00 for lanzones; P40.00-P60.00 for rambutan; and marang P20.00-P40.00 per piece for marang.
3. INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT, PROGRAMS, POLICIES AND GOVERNMENT INTERVENTIONS
  • In Pres. Quirino, Sultan Kudarat, the Local Government Unit (LGU) established a nursery for Vermiculture with a size of 5m by 20m and has 3 rows. They are expecting to start producing organic fertilizer by January 2013.
  • The Provincial Government of Sultan Kudarat dispersed about 70,000 fingerlings (Catfish) to fishpond operators.
  • In Esperanza, Sultan, Kudarat, the LGU put up a permanent building for processing of calamansi fruits.
  • In Antipas, North Cotabato, 10,000 rubber seedlings were distributed to 20 farmers under the Plant Now Pay Later (PNPL) Program by the Municipal Agriculturist of Antipas in coordination with the Provincial Government Unit of North Cotabato.
  • Still in Antipas, North Cotabato, 3,500 cacao seedlings were distributed to 350 employees of LGU-Antipas as recipients of the Plant Now Pay Later (PNPL) Program of the OPAg.
  • In South Cotabato, the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) provided farm machineries and Professional Service Providers (Agriculturist and Agri-business experts) to their ARB farmer beneficiaries under ARCCESS-Agrarian Reform Community Connectivity and Economic Support Services. It aimed to improve farm productivity and net income of ARBs through agri-enterprise, particulary, in their ARCCESS cites in Barangays Cenuano, Tupi Kasan Banga, Malaya Casincasing (Cabuling, San Jose, Cinco), Liwanay, Kusan, Rizal 3, Cabudian and Punong Grande.
4. TRAINING, SEMINARS, WORKSHOPS AND MEETINGS
  • In Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat, a seminar on Rubber Technology was conducted on December 12, 2012. This was attended by 92 farmers/participants who were trained on how to plant, care and tap the rubber tree properly, and the resource persons were rubber technologist from University of Southern Mindanao (USM) Kabacan Cotabato.
  • In Maitum, Sarangani, 97 student-farmers graduated for the Season-Long Farmers' Field School (FFS) at Pearl Garden, Maitum on December 11, 2012. The FFS or a long season training was conducted by the DA in collaboration of Agri-Pinoy, KALIKASAN and the Local Government Unit of Maitum. The long days training had three (3) categories: rubber production, natural farming and technology system and organic and inbred rice production.
  • In South Cotabato, DA-RFU XII in cooperation with the Local Government Unit sustained their program on school on the air. In Surallah, 40 farmers graduated from the training in agricultural technology/practices; and 30 farmers graduated on Integrated Pest Management technology.
  • In Kidapawan City, North Cotabato, 29 organic vegetable farmers completed the Season-long Farmers' Field School held in Amazion, Kidapawan City on December 18, 2012. The training aimed at giving farmers more knowledge and boosting deeper understanding in organically raising different vegetables - eggplant, upo, bell pepper, squash, and others.
  • In Matalam, North Cotabato, 60 rubber farmers completed the Season-long Farmers Field School on Rubber Production Technology held in New Alimodian, Matalam on December 19, 2012. A 16-session of training held every Wednesday aimed to hasten their expertise in the recent rubber farming technology and to make wise decisions in dealing their own farm-related problems. Participants on this third batch of training (FFS Rubber) were from barangays Sarayan, Pinamaton, New Alimodian, Bangbang, Kibia, Lampayan, Minamaing and Tamped.
  • The HVCC-DA-RFU XII conducted two (2) days Orientation/Briefing and hands-on training on Fusarium Eradication and Control in two batches. The First batch was held in Sarangani Highland Garden Hotel, General Santos City from December 11-12, 2012 . The 2nd batch was conducted from December 13-14, 2012 at Grand Ficus Hotel in Kidapawan City. The training included an actual field visit and demo on how to control the fusaruim wilt. This was attended by several ATs from the four provinces in Region XII.
  • DA-RFU XII conducted a two-day 2013 Organic Agriculture Program (OAP) Strategic Planning for Region XII from December 12-13, 2012 at Phila Grande Hotel, Gen Santos City. The planning workshop was attended by different provincial and City OAP focal persons and representatives from BAS ROC XII.
5. WEATHER SITUATION
  • The region experienced moderate to heavy rains caused by low pressure area (LPA) and typhoon Pablo during the first and second week of the month. While fair weather with intermittent shower prevailed on the 3rd to 4th week of the month.
