Monthly Regional Agricultural Situation Report

DAVAO REGION, June 2010

  1. CROPS  
    • About 36.0 hectares of Jolli Hybrid palay seeds planted in Calinan, Tugbok, Buhangin and Marilog Districts, Davao City were on reproductive stage.
    • In Banaybanay and Lupon, Davao Oriental, palay farmers were on seedbed preparation.
  2. FISHERIES  
    • The LGU of Monkayo, Compostela Valley received 53,000 tilapia fingerlings for the month.
  3. PRICES AND MARKET SUPPLY  
    • In Davao City, retail prices of refined and brown sugar significantly increased, these ranged from P50.00 to P55.00 and P44.00 to P48.00 per kilogram, respectively, because of higher prices from the wholesale market. Likewise, carrots and white potato also registered price increases ranging from P50.00 to P80.00 and P70.00 to P90.00 per kilogram, respectively this month. Less arrival of supply from traditional sources pushed prices to go up. On the other hand, retail prices of tomato and calamansi dropped, these ranged from P25.00 to P40.00 and from P30.00 to P50.00 per kilogram, respectively. There was increased supply from traditional sources.
  4. INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT, PROGRAMS, POLICIES AND GOVERNMENT INVENTIONS  
    • Under the Barangay Goat Project of the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian of Davao Oriental, nine (9) cooperators were able to receive three (3) female upgraded goat and a buck for each cooperator of barangay Bobon, Mati. The Barangay Goat Enterprise Program of the Provincial Governor through the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian distributed 300 heads of improved female goat to 30 cooperators in the municipalities of Governor Generoso and San Isidro on the 2nd week of June.
    • A newly-opened farm to market road from Barangay Linoan to Barangay Banagbanag was established by the DPWH of Compostela Valley.
    • Davao del Norte celebrated its 43rd Founding Anniversary last June 24 to July 1, 2010 with the theme: "DdN 43: Growing Outward, Reaping Reward, Moving Forward!". Along with other fun and exciting activities, the weeklong celebration was also highlighted by the Livestock and Poultry Production Week Fair 2010 and the Agri-Tourism Trade Fair, where agricultural products and one-town-one product (OTOP) items were on sale. Carmen, Davao del Norte also celebrated its 42nd Founding Anniversary last June 18. Significant activities included the blessing rites of multi-purpose and wet market buildings. The two buildings which were locally funded were worth about P1.8 million.
  5. TRAINING, SEMINARS, WORKSHOPS AND MEETINGS
    • In Davao del Norte, 50,000 pieces of tilapia fingerlings were dispersed as of June to the municipalities of Talaingod, Asuncion and Kapalong. This was made possible through the Integrated Aquaculture Development Project conducted by the Fisheries Division of PAGRO which aimed to assess current operations by recommending the best management practices in aquaculture. The recipients of said tilapia fingerlings were the inland fisherfolk who currently operated fishponds in the said municipalities.
    • In San Ignacio, Manay, Davao Oriental, a training on Barangay Goat Enterprise Development Program was conducted on June 6, 2010 by the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian. Likewise, a pre-dispersal evaluation activity for the goat enterprise program was also conducted by the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian at Barangay Bobon, Mati on June 7, 2010.
    • A Farmers' Association Leadership Seminar was held at the ATI Training Center, Digos City, Davao del Sur on June 8, 2010 which was conducted by OPAG of Davao del Sur and participated in by 25 farmers association.
    • HVCC Quarterly Meeting was conducted by OPAG at the ATI Training Center, Digos City, Davao del Sur on June 17, 2010 with 50 technicians in attendance.
    • There was a PAFC Meeting conducted by OPAG at the ATI Training Center at Digos City, Davao del Sur on June 23, 2010 and was attended by 25 individuals within the province.
  6. WEATHER SITUATION  
    • Fair weather with partly cloudy and scattered rainshowers prevailed in Davao Region during the month. This was favorable to the growth and development of agricultural crops.
