Monthly Regional Agricultural Situation Report
NORTHERN MINDANAO, June 2010
- CROPS
- The Bukidnon Sugar Planters Association reported that 60,674 hectares of sugarcane were harvested for crop year 2009-2010.
- Palay planting in Lanao del Norte was only 5 percent of forecast area to be planted during the quarter. The other 95 percent were into land preparation and this was attributed to NIA cut off in May that delayed planting activities.
- LIVESTOCK AND POULTRY
- In Lala, Lanao Norte, listing of farmers was conducted to identify carabao dispersal beneficiaries.
- Some commercial swine operators in Camiguin reduced their inventory levels because of high costs of feeds and the inflow of stocks from Bukidnon that weakened farmgate prices of local production.
- FISHERIES
- In Lanao Norte, a five (5) percent growth on seaweed production was attributed to proper cleaning of the culture environment.
- In Sultan Naga Dimaporo (SND), Lanao del Norte, construction of marine fishcage at Barangay Sugod was on-going.
- PRICES AND MARKET SUPPLY
- Abundant supply of tamban was noted in Lanao Norte markets with prices ranging from P20.00 to P25.00 per kilogram. Similarly, prices of some vegetables and fruits declined because of the incoming supply from Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon.
- Retail prices of beef lean meat in Misamis Occidental went up from P200.00 to P220.00 per kilogram since farmgate prices of liveweight increased. Price of carabao mango decreased with the arrival of supply from Davao and Cotabato cities.
- After the many May festivities, prices of vegetables in Cagayan de Oro City markets dropped by P10.00 per kilogram as supply was adequate.
- Buying price of dried seaweeds increased from P6.00 to P9.00 per kilogram. High demand was noted at the Cebu market, the major trading partner of Camiguin growers.
- In Bukidnon, wholesale buying prices of yellow corngrain were recorded at P10.70 to P12.40 per kilogram; those of white corngrain, at P10.75 to P12.00; palay P14.00 to P16.00 per kilogram.
- INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT, PROGRAMS, POLICIES AND GOVERNMENT INVENTIONS
- In Misamis Occidental, Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) released 4,000 bags of sodium chloride (salt) to fertilize 1,000.0 hectares of coconut farms in the province.
- Misamis Oriental PAO reported the 50:50 rice seed subsidy for certified seeds for wet season planting. This program was implemented by DA-RFU X to boost rice production in the region and encouraged farmers to use certified seeds.
- In Camiguin, the upland rice demo farm at Binunsaran, Poblacion, Mambajao was harvested yielding 3.1 mt. while low production of 0.4 mt. was harvested at Owakan, Mahinog.
- Maramag Fisherfolks Association in Camiguin, in coordination with BFAR dispersed more than two (2) million tilapia fingerlings at NAPOCOR dam site.
- LGU-Mahinog in Camiguin maintained a 2.4m x 1.2m x 0.6m or estimated at 0.001 hectare of sea urchin (suaki) culture at Mantigue islet.
- More than 300 kilograms of seaweeds planting materials were turned over to Magting Barangay Council (Camiguin) for distribution to fisherfolk.
- BFAR X seeded around 60,000 GET Excel tilapia fingerlings along Tagoloan River (Misamis Oriental) and strengthened its efforts to protect the river from illegal fishing.
- Farm to market road projects and other related activities were the priority projects of various LGUs in the region.
- TRAINING, SEMINARS, WORKSHOPS AND MEETINGS
- Special project on Broiler and Swine Early Warning Information System, Phase II in the Region held its organizational meeting at the De Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City. This was attended by some BAS staff, NMIS, LGU and DA-RFU X , representatives from the academe and from Swine and Broiler Integrators.
- Orientation seminar on small scale commercial fishing vessel operation was conducted last June 2, 2010 at the J & A Fishpen, Camiguin. This was sponsored by BFAR X.
- WEATHER SITUATION
- Moderate to heavy rainfall was experienced in the region towards the end of the month. This could be the onset of the rainy season which was beneficial to different planting activities.
