Monthly Regional Agricultural Situation Report

CAGAYAN VALLEY, June 2010

  1. CROPS  
    • Planting of corn was almost completed in Isabela while for palay irrigated areas, seedbed preparation was going on since water was released in the first week of the month.
    • In Quirino province, around 60.0 hectares of corn area were contracted by Cornworld Seed Company with their own agricultural technicians to supervise all the activities in the farm.
  2. LIVESTOCK AND POULTRY  
    • Harvesting of broilers in the quality controlled broiler farms in Roxas, Isabela was on-going.
    • A sheep, goat and carabao commercial farm with an inventory of 30, 32 and 30 heads, respectively, was established in Nueva Vizcaya.
  3. FISHERIES  
    • Construction of fish cages at Magat Dam bounded by Cordon and Ramon in Isabela was on-going.
    • Around 15,000 tilapia fingerlings harvested from DA hatchery in Quirino province were seeded at the grow-out ponds of the Pagkain ng Bayan Lagoon in same province.
  4. PRICES AND MARKET SUPPLY  
    • Retail price of tilapia in Isabela increased during the first week of the month because of very low production from freshwater fishponds.
    • Harvesting of locally produced rambutan in Nueva Vizcaya started with farmgate prices ranging from P20.00- P25.00 per kilogram.
  5. INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT, PROGRAMS, POLICIES AND GOVERNMENT INVENTIONS  
    • Distribution of 300 bags of subsidized certified seeds was noted in Alfonso Castaneda, Nueva Vizcaya for planting this season June- July 2010.
    • Massive distribution of subsidized palay seeds for planting this wet season cropping was noted in Isabela. In the same province, vaccination and routinary animal treatment were on-going.
    • Production of organic fertilizer through vermi composting for vegetables and palay was on-going in some municipalities of Nueva Vizcaya.
    • In Quirino, the annual “Handog sa Masa” was held last June 3, 2010 where various free services like medical, dental, cataract operation and awarding of Q- LIFE beneficiaries were part of the program.
    • In Cabarroguis, Quirino, another activity of the One Town One Product (OTOP) was the launching of the “veggie kropek” which was made from vegetables like malunggay leaves, squash, carrots and saluyot.
  6. WEATHER SITUATION  
    • It was generally sunny with sporadic strong rainfall and thunderstorm in the late afternoon and nightime.
