Vegetables Abound in Metro Manila Markets

Period Covered: March 14 - 22, 2012

The prevailing weather condition during the week had been favorable to vegetable production. Inflow of both tropical and temperate vegetables was noticeably heavier this week. This supply situation pulled the prevailing wholesale prices down by P1 to P8 per kilogram relative to prices in the previous week.

Cabbage posted the biggest price discount of 33.0 percent. It was sold at P12 per kilogram this week; it was P18 per kilogram last week.

commodityOther vegetables that cleared bulk trade at lower prices were carrots, chayote, pechay Baguio (wongbok), ampalaya, okra, radish and pechay native.

At the retail counters, most indicator vegetables were priced at last week's levels. This could be attributed to the brisk trade during the week. With the onset of Lenten season, consumers' preference for vegetables and fish was observed.

Lower volume of deliveries of tomato and calamansi made retail prices to increase by P10 per kilogram.

Retail prices of fish were stable except for alumahan and bisugo which were priced lower by P20 per kilogram this week. These were, respectively, quoted at P140 and P180 per kilogram last week.

Retail prices of rice, cooking oil, and meat products continued to prevail at last week's tags.

commodityHowever, consumers enjoyed a 7.69 percent discount for dressed chicken. Its prevailing price of P130 per kilogram last week was reduced to P120 this week.

Metro Manila consumers continued to enjoy a wide variety of fruits at reasonable prices.
