Supply of Farm Products Abundant in Metro Markets
Period Covered: January 25 – February 2, 2012
The favorable weather conditions in major production sites kept Metro markets well supplied with vegetables and fruits during the week in review Condiments like onions as well as tomatoes were notably in abundance. Newly harvested onions, both the red Bermuda and the yellow granex started to flow into the Metropolis. With the increasing deliveries of this condiment in Divisoria and Balintawak , its price is expected to go down in the weeks to come.
Tomato was also cheaper this week. Its wholesale price was marked down by 37.0 percent. A price discount of P5 per kilogram from last week's asking price of P30 was also reflected at retail trade.
Other vegetables showed mixed price movements. Carrots and habitchuelas were offered at bulk sales at higher prices over the week. The same price trend was reflected at retail trading. A kilogram of these vegetables cost the consumer an additional P10 from last week's prevailing prices per kilogram of P70 for carrots and P50 per kilogram for habitchuelas. Cabbage, chayote and pechay Baguio (wongbok) were, likewise, sold at higher prices. However, retailers opted to maintain last week's price tags despite higher acquisition cost due to slow market absorption. On the other hand, price discounts were registered by white potato at P5 per kilogram and pechay native at P10 per kilogram.
At fish counters, the moonlit nights and cold mornings felt in the last few days, somehow affected the volume of catch for some marine species. The supply of other species was observed to be limited. Tulingan was tagged P20 more per kilogram while alumahan, bisugo and shrimps suaje and sugpo retained last week's quotations.
Mangoes and calamansi proliferated the fruit counters. Asking prices of both were reduced from P70 per kilogram to P60.
Most basic and prime commodities remained stable in terms of supply and price situation.
