Vegetable Prices Down in the Metropolis

Period Covered: December 28, 2011 – January 5, 2012

The brisk trading during the holidays in the Metro markets had weakened this week. Prices at both trade levels were either stable or discounted. Heavy deliveries of both temperate and tropical vegetables coupled with slower market absorption led to lower prices this week.

commodityAt Divisoria wholesale market, a P3 per kilogram price cut was recorded for carrots. Price of pechay baguio (wongbok) which was quoted at P40 per kilogram last week was down to P12 per kilogram this week.

The lower price situation at bulk trade was also reflected at retail outlets. A price discount of P10 per kilogram was recorded for cabbage, habitchuelas, white potato and tomato. Carrots and eggplant recorded a price cut of P20 per kilogram.

 

commodityFor fishery products, most of the species monitored remained at previous week's levels except for tilapia and shrimp (suaje) which prevailing prices increased by P10 and P30 per kilogram, respectively.

At the fruit market, stocks of imported fruits remained high. The locally grown fruits continued to abound at fruit stands. Meanwhile, price of calamansi which prevailed at P100 per kilogram last week significantly dropped to P70 this week. Deliveries of this citrus fruit from Quezon province augmented the supply that came from Davao.

commodityBasic and prime commodities remained stable in terms of supply and price levels.
