BAS Media Service: Price Situationer
Metro Markets Well Supplied with Agricultural Food Products
Period Covered: December 21 - 29, 2011
Food requirements for the holiday season were expected to pick-up during the last few days of the year 2011. Traders at both wholesale and retail outlets were noted to have ample stocks. This supply situation barely disturbed price levels at the markets that were monitored over the week.
Basic food items including poultry and meat products have not shown any price movements. Prevailing retail price of fully dressed chicken remained at P130 per kilogram. Prices of beef rump (tapadera), pork ham (pigue) and belly (liempo) were pegged at P260, P170 and P180 per kilogram, respectively. At the fish market, medium-sized bangus and tilapia remained quoted at previous week's pr evailing prices.
However, blue crabs and shrimps (suaje and sugpo)
were priced higher since these were some of the most saleable seafood species during the holidays.
Among vegetables, carrots and habitchuelas recorded
price increases. Mark-ups were placed at P10 and P20 per kilogram over the week.
Eggplant and tomatoes showed the same price trend
due to their dwindling supply within the reference period. Other indicator vegetables continued to sell at last week's price levels.
At the fruit trade, the volume of deliveries of
calamansi still fell below consumption needs. This prompted price to increase by as much as 71.43 percent at wholesale.
This price increment was reflected at retail. Retailers
tagged this citrus fruit at P100 per kilogram this week which was 66.67 percent higher than last week's prevailing retail price of P60 per kilogram.
Lakatan posted similar price movement. This week's
asking price inched up by 14.28 percent compared to last week's price quotation of P35 per kilogram.
Locally grown fruits and imported ones were notably
in abundance as traders anticipated higher demand. Other round-shaped fruits continued to flow in fruit stands.
