Tomato Prices Up in the Metro Markets

Period Covered: November 2 - 10, 2011

Tomato prices at bulk trade moved upward by 86.04 percent as decreasing supply coming from Luzon provinces could not adequately cope with Metro Manila requirements.

commodityHowever, inflow of tomatoes coming from Mindanao, particularly, Cagayan de Oro City, was noted during the week.

At retail outlets, a kilogram of tomatoes was sold at P 90 this week. Last week, the prevailing price was P60 per kilogram. 

Likewise, stringbeans manifested a price mark-up of 33.33 percent at wholesale market and a
P10 increase per kilogram at retail.

Habitchuelas, chayote, carrots ,white potato and pechay Baguio were among the vegetables in wet markets that were offered at lower prices during the reference period.

The highest price discount of P30 was recorded for cabbage which was priced at P 70 per kilogram this week compared to last week's tag of P100 per kilogram. Continuous deliveries of fresh farm produce in Metro wholesale market during the week allowed prices to slightly drop.

commodityAt the fish market, most marine species carried last week's prices. Prices of bangus, galunggong and tulingan were maintained at P120 per kilogram. Volume of tilapia was abundant this week, it was sold at P90 per kilogram.

The ample supply of basic and prime commodities allowed prices to remain at last week's levels.

The fruit market was similarly well provided this week except for calamansi which exhibited dwindling supply from Nueva Ecija. Calamansi prices increased by 14.29 percent at bulk trade and remained at P60 per kilogram at the retail counters.
