Vegetable Prices Moved Up In Metro Manila Wet Market

Period Covered: October 12 - 20, 2011

Ampalaya was priced higher by about 50 percent. It was quoted at P90 per kilogram at bulk trade this week.

commodityPrice of native pechay increased by P20 per kilogram from the prevailing price of P45 last week. This leafy vegetable which is grown in most vegetable gardens in Metro Manila was affected by typhoon.

Tomato prices at bulk trade went up by P13.23 per kilogram compared to last week's level.
Supply from Mindanao producers is yet to adequately fill Metro Manila requirements.

Eggplant retailers acquired their stocks this week at P70 per kilogram up from P60 per kilogram last week.

Pechay Baguio, chayote, carrots and cabbage scorpio were, likewise, more expensive at retail trading this week with prices going up by about P10 to P20 per kilogram.

Wholesale price of calamansi continued to move up. The week recorded a price increase of P2 per kilogram. Lower volume of unloadings from traditional sources such as Nueva Ecija and Mindanao provinces was noted.

commodityMeanwhile, tilapia, mostly coming from Batangas, was still seen abundant this week. Milkfish (bangus) price remained stable at P120 per kilogram while alumahan, alimasag and galunggong posted price cuts of P10 to P20 per kilogram.

Prices of basic commodities like sugar, rice, bottled cooking oil, meat and poultry products remained stable during the reference week.
