Ample Supply of Agricultural Food Products In the Metropolis

Period Covered: August 31 - September 8 , 2011

Most vegetables and fish species which were expensive after typhoon "Mina" hit the country registered significant price cuts during the reference week.

Deliveries of products, particularly, vegetables coming from the storm-affected areas in Northern Luzon have started to improve. This triggered price discounts at both bulk sales and retail trade in the Metropolis.

commodityWholesale price discounts were noted among the temperate vegetables as follows; pechay Baguio (wongbok), by 38.0 percent carrots, by 50.0 percent and cabbage, by 65.0 percent.

Similarly, eggplant and radish recorded price reductions this week.

At the retail outlets, price discounts of P10 per kilogram were offered to consumers of eggplant, radish and pechay Baguio. In the case of carrots and cabbage, previous week's quotations eased by P20 and P30 per kilogram, respectively. Prices, however, stood firm for other indicator vegetables.

commodityThe fair weather condition allowed fishermen to resume their regular fishing activities which were hampered during the recent typhoon.

Prices of marine fish species such as frigate tuna (tulingan), Indian mackerel (alumahan) and grouper (lapu-lapu) dropped by P10 up to P40 per kilogram over the week. The rest of the fish species monitored were quoted at previous week's price levels.

commodityThe fruit market was similarly well provided this week except for mangoes which exhibited dwindling supply. Mango prices increased by P20 per kilogram from last week's prevailing price of P80.

Prices of all basic food items remained stable considering the sufficient volume available in both wholesale and retail trading points.
