Stable Prices Prevailed in Metro Markets

Period Covered: July 6-14, 2011

Prices of basic and prime commodities such as rice, sugar, cooking oil, meat products and chicken in the reference wet markets were stable this week.

commodityContinuous and sufficient inflow of rice from Dagupan grain warehouses was noted over the week. Prevailing retail prices of well-milled and regular-milled rice stood firm at P35 and P30 per kilogram, respectively. Meat, chicken, cooking oil and sugar continued to sell at last week's quotations.

commodityWide choices of fish species were available to the consumers at affordable prices. Milkfish was steadily priced at P90 per kilogram, tilapia at P80, while round scad and Indian mackerel (alumahan) were quoted at P120 per kilogram over the week.Vegetables displayed varied price movements. Lower deliveries of cabbage from Benguet prompted retailer to increase prices by 25 percent. On the other hand, supply of habitchuelas and okra notably increased causing prices at both trade levels to go down. Discounts of P20 per kilogram for habitchuelas and P5 per kilogram for okra were enjoyed by consumers. White potato and tomato were similarly cheaper by P5 per kilogram compared to last week's price quotations.

Retail prices of some indicator vegetables remained the same due to sluggish trade.

At the fruit markets, prices were also stable due to enough supply of banana, pineapple, atis and avocado in the Metropolis.

However, the dwindling supply of calamansi pushed its retail price up by 14 percent or P10 per kilogram higher from last week's asking price of P70 per kilogram.
